Moulding the engineers of tomorrow

"I wanted to give back - and the public relations aspect is a bonus."

ONE of Alrode’s long-standing businesses is giving students the opportunity to gain practical experience by being part of an internship programme.

Rio-Carb, a company that manufactures chromium carbide clad liner plates used in the mining and allied resources industries, is where students can come to get some hands-on know-how to better prepare them for the working world.

“I enjoy teaching and imparting knowledge, so I started this initiative because I know it’s one of the best ways to learn. I wanted to give something back – and the public relations aspect is a bonus,” says director of the company Martin Maine.

He points out that students find it exceedingly difficult to find jobs and this kind of experience can be invaluable in helping them to do so.

“We recently helped 12 Wits students to pay off their debts, student loans and housing costs as part of our Black Economic Empowerment programme, to the value of R900 000.

“The students will get the chance to be exposed to all the important aspects within the field, such as physics, welding, design, computer-aided design, and more.

Uma Krige, one of the students who attended the six week internship programme, says she received excellent all-round experience in production and business processes and it helped her enormously to be around experienced engineers.

Maine, who has been in the industry for many years, is the perfect person to help mould future engineers and technicians with this good-hearted initiative.
