Alberton councillors up the ante

After another year of problems with service delivery from the municipality, ward councillors in Alberton are ready to step up and take action in 2017.

AFTER another year of problems with service delivery from the municipality, ward councillors in Alberton are ready to action change in 2017.

Alderman Bruna Haipel is setting her sights on pylon issues, as well as the K124 route (parts of Kritzinger Road which the council plans to widen), a piece of land in Meyersdal which is plagued by vagrants and the Boma, which has been left to deteriorate over the years.

Councillor Malcolm Maifala is planning on tackling the issue of the sewer system that needs to be upgraded, as it is a massive problem, he says, not only in Alberton, but in Ekurhuleni as a whole.

“Another problem is the lack of storm water drains, which can cause a lot of damage because water cannot drain away fast enough,” said Clr Maifala. “I know of a case where the insurance wouldn’t pay out when there was excessive water damage to a clinic and the library because the municipality hadn’t maintained the storm water drains for many years.”

Further plans include an anti-crime march from Meyersdal Mall to the Dis-Chem Shopping Centre, in Brackenhurst, and combining efforts with the RECORD to publish articles on public safety.

Clr Tiaan Kotze said work has already started to create more storm water drains and added that the public needs to be more educated about these drains. “Many blocked drains are as a result of residents flushing foreign objects down toilets so we want to make education part of our campaign to resolve the problem.”

Issues of paving and the possible conversion of the old Alberton Hall into a museum were also discussed.

“We have spoken to the Pink Ladies, a missing children organisation, and plan to get primary and pre-primary school children registered on their database so that should a child go missing we can be more prepared. We also want to encourage the relocation of the Alberton North Clinic,” added Clr Kotze.

The DA ward councillors have made it there mission to up the ante with regards to service delivery and ask that the community assist them in doing just that – and that they do so in a constructive manner.
