Casual labourers are not vagrants

It is said that these people are using this spot because it is a frequent spot for people seeking casual employees for domestic and construction work.

An investigation by the City of Ekurhuleni has revealed that the people who sit along Second Avenue between 06:00 and 18:00 are job seekers. It was also confirmed that these people are day labourers and not vagrants.

It is said that these people are using this spot because it is a frequent spot for people seeking casual employees for domestic and construction work. They pick them there on a random basis.

The metro recommends that unemployed people visit their nearest Customer Care Centres to access programmes implemented by the Local Economic Development Department of the metro for the unemployed.

Though it was indicated that there were no reported house robberies in the area recently, and the Community Policing Forum in the area is aware of the situation, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) will continue to monitor the area and deal with opportunists who might want to use the plight of the job seekers to commit crime.
