Land claim: people of the South and Alberton need to stand together

The community can view maps of all the affected properties and farms, register to be part of our network, and get more information.

A LAND claim open day will be held on Saturday, December 17 at the Brackenhurst Baptist Church, 76 Roy Campbell Street and Hennie Alberts Street, Brackenhurst, Alberton from 08:00 to 12:00.

At this land claim open day, the community can view maps of all the affected properties and farms, register to be part of our network, get clarity and more information about the land claim, view templates of sample objection letters and chat to various community members who are strategically assisting the community to work together.

“The open day will offer concerned residents and business owners information and clarification about the entire land claim, which farms form part of the land claim, and we will assist people with their objection letters and general queries,” said Toni Mackrell, well known business woman in the South.

All City of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Midvaal community land owners and affected parties that are affected by the Bakwena Ba Mare a Phongole tribe claim – in respect of the land detailed in notice 1377 in the Government Gazette No. 40402 of November 4 – need to give written representation to the Land Rights Commissioner within 60 days; with regards to objecting the validity and feasibility of restoration with reasons and explanations. Your written objection letter needs to be emailed to: The Commissioner at Land Rights to email address bakwena.Claim@drdlr.gov.za by no later than 4th of January 2017.

“(Because it’s) Very important, we are urging all community land owners and affected parties to write an objection for every piece of property owned or affected. Your objection letter must include your title deed number, your full address including the erf/stand number and most importantly, the reason(s) for your objection. We need to stand together as a united Southern community and ensure that every single land owner and affected party, submits an objection letter for every individual property before January 4, 2017.

“This land claim has given us the opportunity for all Southern community members to bring forward any history available, going back to the 1800’s, pertaining to the affected properties of the land claim,” Toni said.

For more information on the open day, to submit your history and for any general queries, please contact the land claim open day coordinator: Carla De Abreu on 072 222 1388, or by email landclaimssouth@gmail.com.

The committee is also looking for volunteers to assist at the land claim open day on Saturday, December 17. Please let Carla know if you can assist in any way.
