Ekurhuleni comment on massive flooding caused by a blocked drain

Record recently reported on a blocked drain that was causing millions of litres of water to be wasted in Alrode recently.

RECORD recently reported on a blocked drain that was causing massive amounts of water to be wasted in Alrode recently.

“The sewer blockage was first reported on 05 September 2016. As the sewer was overflowing next to the factories at Alrode, a team of technicians were sent on-site to investigate the cause,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

“The source of the blockage could not be identified on the day due to the sewer line being in the field and running inside culverts. However, a contractor was called in to dig up manholes that were concealed by rubble dumped at the site.

“After vigorous investigations using Tractor-Loader-Backhoe (TLBs) equipment and jetting trucks, it was discovered that the pipe was blocked inside the channel, hence it took longer to get to the bottom of the problem.

“The contractor cleared the sewer blockage from the channel going upstream, but the pipe was found to be broken. Work is currently underway to repair the pipe.

“The City of Ekurhuleni wishes to apologies for the inconvenience caused during the process.”
