Refuse removal woes

RESIDENTS in Alberton have expressed concern over refuse removal workers not collecting their trash for extended periods.
The RECORD has received several calls and letters asking if we know what the problem is; and why they aren’t collecting their bins?
“My bin hasn’t been collected in quite a long time and it is becoming a problem,” said one worried resident.
Yet another said that the dump in Alrode has been trashed and tons of rubble and rubbish have been dumped on the roadway where people drive – and that all the workers have left. “It’s bad enough there are so many workers; way more than needed. But they don’t even do anything; they literally sit and lie around sleeping the whole day, getting fat paychecks and now they have the nerve to strike?!”, the man exclaimed incredulously.
RECORD contacted the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) for comment and they had this to say:
“Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Alberton Waste Management Services Depot experienced non-rendering of services from Monday, October 3 until Wednesday, October 5.
“The matter has been resolved and workers resumed their work as from Thursday morning, October 6. The depot has put a contingency plan in place in order to address the waste backlog.
“The depot commits that all refuse will be collected soon,” said EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe.
