Sheldon Spear, the boy with a big heart
Sheldon Spear, a young man from Alberton, is making a big difference in a very big way.
Sheldon Spear, a young Albertonian, is making a huge difference for nearby communities.
RECORD recently reported on Sheldon and his Need2Read project, giving underprivileged kids the gift of yet another library; an opportunity to expand their minds with reading.
Sheldon met with the RECORD on Thursday October 6, to tell us more about what makes him tick, his everyday life and what inspires him to help others the way he does.
The venue for the meeting was the picturesque Rietvlei Zoo Farm, where Sheldon was helping his mother with one of her projects, Zak’s Enviro Club – which is aimed at letting children experience the outdoors, doing some good and having loads of fun at the same time; by feeding animals, picking up trash, etc.
It seems doing good runs in the family. “It’s a good way of getting city kids into this beautiful environment, away from all the games and television to experience the tranquility and peace of nature. I think it’s a very valuable experience to have,” said Sheldon.
“It’s just the way I grew up. I remember past Christmas times – going to orphanages and giving the children gifts; or, taking food to and visiting public servants like police and firemen etc, to show our appreciation. I was taught to always give back and to have faith in God,” added the inspirational young man.
Sheldon recently celebrated his 12th birthday and enjoys playing hockey for his school, Waterstone College.
When asked a little about what he does when not helping others, he proudly mentioned his girlfriend: “she’s tall; blonde; blue eyes”.
On plans for the future, Sheldon said he wants to get other children involved in initiatives like his Need2Read project.
“I plan on getting more libraries off the ground and I’m currently busy with one,” he explained.
Keep an eye out for this born and bred Albertonian. Sheldon is sure to continue doing great things.
