Tactical officer saves man’s life

Nicholas de Wet (48) is still in a critical condition after he was electrocuted.

“WHEN there is an emergency, training kicks in,” was the words of Matthew Callow, a CPS tactical officer, who saved a man’s life on September 22.

CPS Security received a panic signal from Raceview Motors and their reaction unit was dispatched. While on their way, Matthew was told Nicholas de Wet, aged 48, was unconscious after he was electrocuted.

“When I arrived on the scene I immediately switched off the power box before attending to him. He had no pulse and he was not breathing so I started doing CPR on him. Emer-G-Med and National Paramedics arrived and also started to help Nicholas,” said Matthew.

After more than 30 minutes the man had a pulse.

Matthew is one of the sons of paramedic Mike Callow, and he told the RECORD that he was born into the industry and learned a few things from his father and that is how he knows how to do CPR. “This was not my first time doing CPR on someone,” he said.

According to the paramedics, Chantelle Peel from National Paramedics and Gary Banbury from Emer-G-Med, the man was transferred to the Netcare Union Hospital and is still in a critical condition.

Chantelle also said that the cause of the incident is still unknown.

Tyrone van der Merwe, CPS sales director, thanked Matthew and the paramedics for saving the man’s life and for doing something that was out of his hands.

The RECORD will keep our readers informed about Nicholas’ progress.
