Trees cause of sewage leak – EMM

The EMM comments on sewage leaking into a stream in Brackenhurst.

THE RECORD recently placed a letter from a concerned resident regarding sewage leaking into a stream in Brackenhurst since Friday, September 2.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) did not comment at the time of going to print, but have subsequently done so. “You are correct that the leak was reported on Saturday, September 3. We tried to open it on the same day but were unsuccessful. The Jet truck went out on Sunday, September 4, and was also unsuccessful,” said Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson.

“The main problem is the trees on the sewer servitudes and the access to our main lines running inside stands in servitudes. On Tuesday, September 6, we managed to open the line and it, unfortunately, blocked again. It was then again opened on Thursday, September 8. It was inspected on Monday, September 12, and it was blocked again. A team was dispatched to unblock it once again.

“Trees in or next to our sewers causing a partial blockage and then foreign objects thrown into the sewers that get stuck to the roots cause most of the blockages. Access to manholes when people are at work and their stands locked, prevent officials from unblocking and to do preventative cleaning,” added Gadebe.
