Keep your pets tick and flea free

Make sure to dip your dogs as the weather warms up.

AS the weather warms up so ticks especially become more prevalent.

Ticks are second only to mosquitoes throughout the world in transmitting infectious diseases to humans and animals. If your pet is bitten by a tick, it can become very sick and even die, so it’s important to take preventative measures.

Ticks are parasites that feed on the blood of the unfortunate host animals such as cats and dogs. According to Alberton SPCA ticks can transmit a variety of diseases through their bite as they bury their head into the host’s skin when they bite and gorge themselves on the blood. They prefer to attach close to the head, neck, ears and feet of an animal but can be anywhere so it’s important you check your pets regularly. There are a number of complications associated with ticks such as blood loss, anaemia, skin irritation or infection. Again you can buy numerous remedies to prevent any tick infestation which also are a flea prevention. These are available from your vet or a good pet supplies shop.

Fleas are the most common external parasite to plague companion animals. Again, they feed on blood and are persistent in the environment. If you suspect your pet has fleas, consult your vet and also ensure all your pets are treated for fleas. You will also need to clean bedding, rugs, blankets etc.

You can buy different products to treat flea infestations as well as different preventative flea control products. Just remember never to use a dog flea treatment on a cat.

Tick and flea prevention treatments come in either spray-on liquid or tablets form.

Alternatively for R10 you can dip your dog at the Alberton SPCA.

As a responsible pet owner it is imperative that you use flea and tick prevention for your pet. Not only will you have a healthier, happier pet but you’ll be saving yourself expensive vet bills and also ensuring you or your family do not get sick.
