Local couple celebrate anniversary on Swartkoppies pedestrian bridge

Although his wife had an idea what the surprise was about, she was still moved to tears.

TWENTY years ago, Allen van Zyl surprised his wife Odette on Valentines Day by dressing up in a suit, asking her to dress up also.

Then in peak afternoon traffic on one of the most busiest roads in Hyde Park ,Craighall Park in Jan Smuts Avenue, he set up a table in the middle island with various snacks and champagne.

On Saturday, September 3, the scene was once again set. To celebrate their 18th wedding anniversary, he chose the pedestrian bridge leading over Swartkoppies Road between Vermooten and Hennie Alberts Road.

His 17-year-old son was the chef, 14-year-old daughter the waitress, and 24-year-old daughter and her boyfriend the co- ordinators.

Party planners as well as close friends, Bronwyn and Derrick helped with the set-up and added their professional and magical touch.

They arrived at the bridge on the Meyersdal side (the “kitchen” was set up on the school side) and there were 18 helium balloons signifying the length of marriage strung along the railings of the bridge leading to their beautifully decorated table and chairs.

Although his wife had an idea what the surprise was about, she was still moved to tears.

Sounds of hooters honking from passing cars, smiles from drivers and thumbs-up shown through windows was wonderful.

“Nothing like a little effort to show your appreciation for your wife once in a while, makes me realise I should do it more often. Giving is actually receiving,” Allen commented.

Most ladies would agree that is a great act to follow.
