One man dead and one critical after light aircraft falls

A MAN in his early 30s was killed and his co-pilot was critically injured when the light aircraft they were flying crashed in Alrode South, near Kliprivier Road, in Ekurhuleni, on Wednesday at around 12:00.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue teams from the Alberton, Thokoza and Palmridge fire stations all responded to the scene, for intervention.

Initially the aircraft was reported to have caught fire.

On arrival, one pilot was found outside the wreckage and paramedics from private ambulance services were busy with pre-hospital medical treatment.

Unfortunately, the second patient was still inside the wreckage and was declared dead on scene. No other person was injured.

Information on scene states that both victims were qualified pilots who were flying from Panorama Airfield near Kliprivier.

The cause of the crash is currently undetermined, however, aviation authorities and the police have commenced with the investigations.
