Alberton DJ talks music

A DJ from Alberton is starting to make a name for himself.

YOUNG, dynamic and with the world at his feet, this DJ from Alberton is starting to make a name for himself.

The RECORD spoke to Jose Rocha, about how he came to be a DJ and what drives him.

Asked to describe himself in his own words, he says: “Keeping it short and sweet, I am a 19-year-old, versatile DJ/producer from the south of Johannesburg. My >favourite genres would be hip-hop and that >PHAT deep house.”Just like every other DJ, I started on Virtual DJ and moved my way up from there.”

Rocha plans to bring out a new single very soon and says we can expect a lot of new music later this year.

“The local scene took a huge step forward in the past year; I think we should start seeing a lot of artists break through internationally,” Rocha adds about what he thinks of the local music industry.

About the future: “Production-wise, I would like to collaborate with some of the big names in the industry and release an album in around two years’ time. I would also like to travel and play for different crowds around the country and, hopefully, around the world.

“I’m working on raising funds for local charities and the less fortunate. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart when it comes to helping and its just something I want to put into action on a larger scale.”

Asked if there’s a track in particular that has become popular, but that he dislikes, he instantly knows the answer: “Panda Panda Panda,” he says, laughing.

“I have played at almost every club in Johannesburg and have also had a few gigs in Durban, Nelspruit, Potchefstroom, Northern Cape and so on, but one of my goals is to feature on Ultra South Africa, a festival I’ve been to and where the production is unbelievable; it’s on an international level.

”It’s things like this that are growing the music industry in South Africa, so it will be cool to be part of that,” adds Rocha.

He says he hosts his own events and that he’s trying to create a platform for up-and-coming talent to have a chance to perform and show the masses of what they’re capable.

“Never give up, work hard and focus. Create a brand for yourself and build it up,” is his advice to all aspiring DJs.
