SPCA gives tips

This is what you should do when you see a stray animal.

ALBERTON SPCA is usually full with strays as well as surrendered dogs and cats. Only a few strays get returned to their family as many people do not think to check at their local SPCA.

If your pet is microchipped, it stands a better chance of being returned to you as the SPCA can access your details from a central database. This can prevent a lot of heartache as pets can be returned quickly and easily.

If your pet goes missing please phone the SPCA on 011 907 1568 and report it. You can also report it to their Facebook page and also on the Great Alberton CPF (Lost and Found Pets) page on Facebook.

It is important you pay a visit to the SPCA in person to check if your pet is there as only you will really know your furry friend. In addition, check with the local vets, nearby SPCAs (Johannesburg and Germiston) and the Animal Anti-Cruelty League. Again, going in person is important.

It is often very difficult to catch strays and although they do their best, sometimes the animal evades capture.

If you see a stray animal in the road, please follow these steps:

1. If you are able to, please get the animal somewhere safe, such as in your car or on your property. While this is not always possible, it does make it a lot easier for an SPCA member to come fetch the animal.

2. If you do manage to catch the animal, please bring it through to the branch in Lincoln Road, General Alberts Park. Alternatively, you can drop it off at most vets, who will then contact the SPCA.

3. If you are unable to contain the animal, please report it to the SPCA immediately with as much information as possible. You can either call the office during working hours on 011 907 1568, or the emergency number 071 626 0721. Please do not send an email or post to Facebook as this causes a big delay and is not seen in time.

4. Due to being out on other calls, it can often be very hard for SPCA staff to reach the animal in time as they move very quickly from the area they are in, especially when scared. If possible, please wait with the animal until the SPCA arrives.

5. Pets do get lost and it’s not always the owner’s fault. If you find a stray but do not want to bring it to the SPCA, please notify them as often they have the owner’s details. All strays picked up need to be checked for a microchip and just keeping a stray dog is tantamount to theft.
