THE Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has erected gym equipment at a park in Alberton recently.

The equipment, set up in the Yellow Wood Street park in Mayberry Park, looks like it could be playground equipment for the kids, but it actually has a greater function than just play: fitness.

A resident from the area is very excited about the new development at the park; “It’s an amazing community-centered idea, and I want people to know about it, and I’m thankful to the municipality for this. It’s a brilliant concept,” says Wesley Jansen van Vuuren.

Similar fitness parks can be seen in countries such as the US and Australia.

“The installation of gym equipment is among the municipality’s initiatives to beautify and upgrade parks and to encourage active lifestyles in our communities,” says Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson.
