Cruelty to animals is increasing

A beautiful Daschund was so badly injured that his eye had to be removed

IN this past year, Alberton SPCA’s inspectors have dealt with a number of incidents involving pigs, cattle, goats, sheep and chickens as well as dogs and cats, and sadly cruelty to animals is on the increase.

Recently a beautiful dachshund male was found injured. The SPCA’s vet had to remove his eye as it was too badly damaged to save. It could not be confirmed whether this was the result of cruelty or just a normal injury. And now this friendly and loving dog is looking for a new home and is waiting patiently for your call.

“We are an organisation for the prevention of cruelty to all animals and deal with a number of complaints each year. Not only is the SPCA also the municipal pound, but we are responsible for carrying out routine inspections at all the pet shops and grooming parlours in and around Alberton to ensure they adhere to the necessary rules and regulations. In addition, all security companies who have dogs are also checked regularly thereby trying to ensure no ill treatment of dogs takes place. When the circus is in town we also check on the conditions of the animals in their care,” says Vanja Ingold on behalf of Alberton SPCA.

Alberton SPCA strongly promotes the notion of “adopt, don’t shop” and encourages members of the public to rather rescue a pet than buy from a pet shop or puppy mill. “Adopted pets are in no way inferior and we often have pure-bred dogs and cats available for adoption. Why not pay us a visit in Lincoln Road and see for yourself. We’re sure you’ll find a forever friend waiting,” she said.

The SPCA receives no government funding and is totally reliant on the public for support. A request goes out to the community for dry cat pellets, either Whiskers or Friskies, as well as white A4 copy paper and black bin bags. If you can donate or need more information, contact Alberton SPCA on 011 907 1568.
