POVERTY and unemployment needed to be challenged head-on and thus the government came up with Community Works Programme (CWP).

The government has initiated a variety of programmes around townships in all provinces to alleviate the big problem of unemployment facing the masses of the country, and they have been implemented everywhere. The RECORD met the team of CWP workers at Opelweg Primary School where they were cleaning the premises and the garden. The programme started in March 2016 and will end in March 2017.

“The contract is only for 12 months but we are grateful because we at least have an income to take care of our families. Our work is to clean parks, schools, malls and streets and we really enjoy our work,” said the team leader, Mookho Mononela.
