Fuel delivery strike?

It has widely been reported, along with rumours, that there are planned fuel service delivery strikes around South Africa.

THERE have been rumours on social media and in the community about planned fuel service delivery strikes around South Africa.

The RECORD has contacted several organisations and companies who would be in the know, and they have widely denied any such strikes, saying it is simply rumour, nothing more.

Chevron (an American multinational energy corporation) had this to say about the reports: “Chevron South Africa is aware of incorrect information circulating on social media regarding a national fuel delivery strike. We can confirm that this information is incorrect and fuel deliveries and supplies to filling stations across the country remain normal,” stated communications manager for the company, Suzanne Pullinger.

One Fuel franchisee in Alberton had a different tale to tell.

According to Dan Naidoo, owner of a Caltex service station, there are ongoing negotiations with unions within the fuel industry.

“There have been threats of strike action and nothing more than that. However there are meetings planned for next week (from Monday, July 4) and further meetings in the month of July. We are confident and hopeful of a successful and positive outcome.

“These threats have resulted in panic buying, both by consumers and fuel retailers, and therefore caused a delivery lag. The expected price increase next week and obviously month-end pressures adds to the problem.

“For now, we do not expect product outages or shortages,” says Naidoo.

According to sources, unions and their members are a big source of worry and problems in the industry, and partly to blame for Chevron leaving South Africa, as it is supposedly becoming unbearable and unprofitable for them to work in these kinds of conditions in the country.
