Accident kills five

Suspects apparently managed to run away.

Five people believed to be taxi passengers were killed and several injured in a collision involving a taxi and a light motor vehicle in Germiston N3 northbound just before the Geldenhuys interchange.

The accident happened around 14:00 on June 27, causing the entire freeway to come to a standstill. It is believed that there was a high-speed chase between the white Mercedes-Benz and the police, whereby the sedan crashed into the back of the taxi full of passengers, forcing the taxi to roll before landing on its roof.

At least four patients were declared dead on scene, one was critically injured and airlifted from the scene to hospital, and eight others sustained serious but stable injuries and were transported to various hospitals within the City of Ekurhuleni.

All patients, the deceased and injured were travelling in the taxi.

The occupants of the sedan apparently managed to run away from the scene after the crash.

Two guns were found in the suspects’ abandoned vehicle.

The freeway was partially closed for the duration of the accident. Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and the South African Police Services (SAPS) are investigating the cause.

The two ran away and were still at large.

The accident caused traffic congestion between the Elands and Geldenhuys interchanges between 14:00 and 16:00, Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Kgasago said.
