Shop owner shot dead

After the fourth shot there was total silence.

A shop owner in Eden Park was shot and killed in his shop on Monday, June 20.

“It was a quiet evening and I had just bought bread at 19:30 and when I entered my house, I heard a gunshot. I peeped through my door and saw four armed men at the shop. They were shouting ‘Give the money’. Two more shots were fired and I scrambled to the floor for my own safety,” said a woman who stays near the container shop and who asked not to be named.

It is further alleged by eyewitnesses that after the first gunshot, many residents came out of their homes to see what was happening but one of the gun-wielding suspects stood in Adam Kok Street and instructed everybody to retreat or be shot.

Witnesses told the RECORD three of the suspects broke down the shop door and one entered. After a few minutes of shouting which could be heard coming from inside the container, a fourth shot was fired.

“Suddenly there was total silence. One of the thugs came out of the shop, joined the other three accomplices and ran in the direction of Greenfields, across the notorious open veld between Riemvasmaak and Greenfields,” the witness said.

SAPS was called but at the time of their arrival, the robbers were already gone and the shop owner was declared dead on the scene.

A case of murder and armed business robbery has been opened and Eden Park SAPS is investigating.
