Charter of Election Ethics visited

THE Moral Regeneration Movement hosted an event discussing the Charter of Election Ethics recently.

On Friday, June 10, the Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM), spoke to faith-based organisations, youth and community leaders and members about acting ethically and voting responsibly. The talk took place at the Alberton Municipal Council Chambers.

The MRM is an organisation dating back to 1997, when former president Nelson Mandela met with the then deputy minister of education, Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa, various faith-based organisations and the SABC, to discuss spiritual transformation. At that meeting, President Mandela spoke about the role of religion in nation-building and social transformation, and the need for religious institutions to work with the state to overcome the “spiritual malaise” underpinning the crime problem.

The meeting, scheduled for 10:00, got off to a late start (12:00), due to various problems, and perhaps some confusion, but things flowed well once the talks started.

Bongi Msimang, from the organisation, kicked things off and started by welcoming everyone present, followed by the purpose and background of the MRM, the presentation of the charter, a discussion, the way forward, and closure.

The organisation put a lot of emphasis on the importance of voting, and doing so responsibly.

The charter also had a message for political parties, saying: “Political parties must always strive to elect candidates who are ethical, principled, and competent. Most importantly, political candidates should always aim to serve the communities and the country before their party or themselves.”

With the upcoming elections looming, it may be worth a look at what the MRM proposes.
