5 Things you need to know about the JUMA Race

The Hollard Juma Jozi Urban Mountain Bike Adventure kicks off on Sunday 29 May across the world’s biggest urban forest. Here’s all you need to know about the race.

In its third year running, the Hollard Jozi Urban Mountain Bike Adventure (JUMA)  is the biggest urban mountain biking event in the world and is designed to celebrate Johannesburg’s adventure weekend. JUMA is part of a project by Johannesburg City Parks to create new and exciting ways of using green spaces around the urban jungle. It will start at Mark’s Park in Emmarentia on Sunday, 29 May.

Joburg Today TV spoke to Russell Willis and Mark Castel, event organisers and founders of the Hollard JUMA. They gave us an insight about the Hollard JUMA, a mountain bike race that turns the worlds’ biggest urban forest into the ultimate mountain biker’s playground with a course build worth over R1.5 million.

Here are five essential details about the race.

1. The routes are exciting

The JUMA Race has two separate routes this year; a 54km and 22km urban ride through the heart of Johannesburg. The 54km Juma race is not for beginner riders, riders entering the 54km race must be sure of their riding skills and fitness levels on a bike.

The 22km route is designed for the newbies, less skilled or less fit riders. The 22km provides riders with mostly jeep track and some single track sections, over three exciting (but very safe) scaffolding ramp. The halfway point with a water hole peaks at 10km with a view of the whole Melville Koppie ridge where riders will be able to see the 54km riders coming through the famous Melville Koppies. The route has also been designed to include sections through reed and marshlands.

2. The entry is affordable

The 54 Km kicks off at 7am and is R399 to enter. The 22km will be sent via sms and entry is R299. The 1km race is for kids aged 4-6 years and the 2km is for kids aged 7-9 years. It kicks off at 11 am and 1 pm and entry is R85 per person.
