Attempted vehicle theft at MOTS

“We are very grateful no one was injured and due to the quick reaction by mall security, with the assistance of SOS, the CPF and SAPS, arrests were made.

ON Tuesday evening, May 17 at around 20:30 there was an attempted vehicle theft at Mall of the South.

“We are very grateful no one was injured and due to the quick reaction by mall security, with the assistance of SOS, the CPF and SAPS, arrests were made.

“We want to assure our tenants and shoppers that we will continue fighting crime to ensure a safe and secure environment for all. Mall management is working very closely with law enforcement agencies to combat crime in the area and treats every single investigation as important.

“We would like to extend a special thanks to Quatro Security and the staff who put their lives in danger to catch the criminals and for their quick response. We would also like to issue a special thanks to SAPS and the CPF for their assistance. Counselling will be given to the guards involved in catching the suspects,” said Mall of the South management.

According to Col Lungelo Dlamini, at about 18:45 the complainant parked his Toyota Tazz on the upper level parking at Mall of the South. “When he returned to his vehicle around 20:30 he saw the back lights were on and as he approached he found a man on the driver’s side trying to start the vehicle.

“He fought with the suspect as he tried to remove him from his vehicle. There was another Tazz (green) parked next to his vehicle with three men who came out and began assaulting him with their fists and a hammer. The suspect drove the complainant’s vehicle to the exit gate and the complainant ran after the suspects and fired one warning shot,” said Dlamini. It’s not been ascertained whether the suspect exited the parking lot in the complainant’s vehicle.

“Two suspects aged between 40 and 42 years old were arrested and detained at Mondeor Police Station, and were charged with attempted theft of a motor vehicle and of being in possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

“It was ascertained the green Toyota Tazz that the suspects were using was stolen in Hillbrow at the beginning of May. The suspects will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on May 19,” added Dlamini.
