Councillor disappointed in work at cemetery

Alberton cemetery has been left in an overgrown state according to local councillor Izak Berg.

COUNCILLOR Izak Berg has taken umbrage with Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality service delivery to the Alberton cemetery.

Clr Berg investigated the state of Alberton cemetery after a resident complained in early March. The councillor alerted the municipality to the overgrown weeds and uncut grass at the cemetery and was told that work was completed on March 9.

After Clr Berg personally visited the site he was unsatisfied with the progress of the maintenance.

“I am sick and tired of officials taking councillors for a ride and to let them look bad in the eyes of the public. The maintenance people were on site but they were all sitting in the corner of the cemetery, not working,” the councillor stated.

In February 2015 the EMM released a statement saying that the maintenance of cemeteries is important to prevent crime.“The municipality also understands that the crime phenomenon is opportunistic in nature, which requires us to keep maintenance up to date in order for criminals not to take advantage of the long grass and overgrown weeds,” EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe said.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has been contacted for comment.
