THE CASE involving the murder of a young man finally saw its day in court. Bradley du Preez (20), died after being assaulted by four assailants at the Lemontree Spur on 22 June, 2014.

The trial started on 29 February at the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court. Proceedings started with statements from the state prosecutor that it is continuing its case as negotiations with the accused were unsuccessful. All of the accused pleaded not guilty, denied the existence of common purpose (intent) but did not dispute time and place and that no further injuries were caused before the post mortem (autopsy) was done on 26 June, 2014.

The presiding officer, Judge Singh, informed the accused that should they be found guilty, they could spend between 15 to 25 years in prison, depending on prior offences they may have had. She went on to say that the court could use its own discretion and add five years to the sentence if it saw fit to do so.

The court called its first witness but did not make much progress, as certain evidence was not ready to be presented and the trial would continue the following day.
