Register to vote for local government

The IEC has set aside two days in March for voter registration as part of its preparations for the upcoming local government elections.

THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has set aside two days in March for voter registration as part of its preparations for the upcoming local government elections.

Although the date for the elections has not yet been determined, the IEC is encouraging citizens who turned 18 since the last elections in 2014, to register to vote on Saturday, March 5, and Sunday, March 6.

The registration will take place between 8:00 and 17:00 on both days. People who have changed addresses need to update their details and re-register in their new wards.

Local government elections are held every five years. The IEC says anyone can register to vote if he or she is a South African citizen, is 18 years or older and has a valid a green, bar-coded ID book, smartcard ID or a valid temporary ID certificate.

Residents can alternatively apply for registration during office hours at the IEC’s office responsible for one’s voting district. By law, everyone must apply in person. No online or e-mail registrations are permitted. No other forms of identification are accepted and no proof of residence is required.

Residents must register in the voting district in which they live and vote at the voting station where they are registered. If they have already registered as a voter and have recently moved or realise that they will be living in another place on election day, residents must go back to a registration point and fill in a form to change their registration details.

They will then be moved to the correct voting district and their name will be put on the voters’ roll for that district. To find out where your correct voting station is, go to https://maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/

Residents are encouraged to follow the IEC Facebook page (IECSouthAfrica) or follow the Twitter handle @IECSouthAfrica for regular updates.
