THIS week’s fitness fad is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).
HIIT is a training concept in which low to moderate intensity intervals are alternated with high intensity intervals. HIIT is considered to be much more effective than normal cardio because the intensity is higher and you are able to increase both your aerobic and anaerobic (muscle) endurance while burning more fat than ever before.
In research, HIIT has been shown to burn adipose tissue (fat) up to 50 per cent more efficiently than low-intensity exercise. It has also been shown to speed up your metabolism which helps you burn more calories throughout the day.
The idea behind this form of exercise is that you train at a higher intensity for shorter periods of time, but also have shorter rest periods, which means that you not only train your muscles, but also your heart and lungs.
