Stay safe: Children learn valuable safety tips in a fun and interesting way

Children are never too young to be educated and made aware, in a non-threatening manner, of the dangers that exist in our society.

WELL KNOWN Johannesburg entertainer, Mr ADT (aka Darin McDowall) visited the children of Top Kids Nursery School and After-Care, on February 12, to teach them home safety skills in a fun and entertaining way.

The show, a complementary service offered by ADT Security to pre-primary and primary schools, focused on important topics including: bullying, home robberies, keeping their belongings safe, being alert (paying attention to surroundings, how to get help from the police, etc), stranger danger and respecting fellow South Africans.

Other topics which were also covered included: how to use panic alarm buttons, never to open the door to a stranger, and the importance of knowing their parents’ contact details and other emergency numbers, such as the number for their security company and the South African Police Services (SAPS).

“He also educated the children about safety in the home, gun safety, the importance of wearing a seat belt, respect for dogs we don’t know, where to keep your valuables in the car and what to do if hijacked. The show was presented in an entertaining and interesting way and was thoroughly enjoyed by all,” says Samantha de Beer, principal of Top Kids.

“Unfortunately, in South Africa there is no escape from conversations about crime,” says Theunis Kotze, managing director of ADT inland region. “Children are never too young to be educated and made aware, in a non-threatening manner, of the dangers that exist in our society. They need to be empowered to be able to protect themselves in a dangerous situation,” says Kotze.

“Darin has a fun, friendly way of addressing these pertinent issues. He has found the perfect balance, as the show keeps the children informed and entertained while reinforcing valuable safety tips.”

The Mr ADT shows take place at local schools and are hosted free of charge by ADT. If a teacher or parent is interested in booking a show for their school, they are welcome to email Tamryn Salemink on tcarr.za@adt.co.za for further information.
