Streets paved in gold

Councillor Bruna Haipel suspects wasteful expenditure of ratepayers' money on paving in Alberton North.

COUNCILLOR Bruna Haipel of Ward 37 is querying the price of the replacement of sidewalk paving after reportedly being told that one street corner cost R 290 000 to repair.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) appointed a contractor to replace the paving in Alberton North beginning with an area on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Gerrit Marritz Street last year. Clr Haipel reported that she inquired about other sections of pavement to be replaced.

Clr Haipel stated that she was informed that R 290 000 of the R 300 000 budget had been spent on repaving the corner. The councillor contacted different paving companies and was reportedly quoted prices much lower than the spent price.

Councillor Haipel is calling for an urgent investigation by the Ekurhuleni Roads Department into the cost of the paving and how it was calculated. The councillor characterised the incident as wasteful expenditure of ratepayer’s money.

The EMM has been contacted for comment.
