Silverman shooting trial begins

The Deep in the Woods trial began on Thursday, January 28 after more than a year of postponements.

THE trial surrounding the tragic events of October 4, 2014, at the Deep in Woods Festival, began on Thursday, January 28.

The trial proceeded after four postponements. The first postponement was in May, because the accused could not attend the court session. It was delayed a second time due to disclosure and a third time due to representation. The fourth postponement occurred on Wednesday, January 27 because the police docket was not brought to court.

Thursday’s trial began with the accused, Jared Silverman, being formally charged with four counts of attempted murder at Meyer’s Farm, on October 4, 2014. Silverman pled not guilty to all four counts.

The state’s first witness, Bradley Swartz, described his version of events to the court and was cross-examined by defence attorney Riaan Louw.

The defence disputed technical aspects of Swartz’ testimony, citing differences in wording in his initial statement and his oral testimony given before the court.

Swartz described arriving at the festival and waiting in line for drinks tokens before walking with a friend and hearing a shout behind him.

He claims he turned around and saw Silverman with a gun, shooting at him.

Swartz was previously acquainted with Silverman, following two violent altercations involving his brother and Silverman.

Swartz stated in his testimony that, “he [Silverman] had a problem with my brother and took it out on me”. He also described the psychological after-effects that the shooting had on him.

He stated that his social life has been significantly reduced following the events and reported that he still receives threats following the incident.

Louw agreed that an acrimonious relationship existed between Silverman and members of the Swartz family and stated that “it was just a matter of time before something bad happened”.

The remainder of the witnesses are scheduled to appear before the court in June, when the trial will continue.
