I’m so fed-up of humans

The Alberton RECORD recently interviewed Daisy the Dassie who shared her thoughts on the recent controversial events surrounding the feeding of dassies and yellow mongoose by a couple of residents in the area.

MEYERSDAL – “My family have lived in the Meyersdal Koppies for generations, enjoying the beautiful rolling hills and rocky areas where we build our homes. For years we were left totally undisturbed, loving our life and enjoying succulent flora for breakfast and dinner.

“Then a few years ago we heard it on the grapevine that humans were coming into our koppies. The next thing we knew, as we sunbathed on top of the rocks, huge people were walking in the koppies discussing what they were going to build on our land. Mansions, houses, townhouses??

“This called for a dassie meeting and some of our family decided it would be better to leave the koppies before humans invaded. Late at night some crept across the road, some made it to the other side but some were run over and squashed, leaving their babies sobbing at the roadside.

“Many of us decided to hold our ground and dug in our paws against the human invasion. That was until gigantic mechanical aliens began digging up the koppies and fields, leaving us no choice but to run further into the hills.

“As the first brick buildings went up and humans moved in, we had to hide and try to avoid them. It was very difficult at first as we had no idea when one would appear. They came from all sides and got into smaller machines which they drove all over our territory. Some threw stones at us while others attempted to talk to us!

“Then disaster struck! We saw the same mechanical equipment across the road beginning to destroy the fields on the other side, where we were planning to elope to as soon as we could get our families and friends all together.  It was a terrifying thought that all our homes would be gone and we’d have nowhere else to run to.

“Humans don’t understand our plight.  We’ve lost the fight to live as we have done for hundreds of years and nearly all our food has gone.  Soon we’ll be extinct. Thank you to the kind humans who feed us. It seems after all some humans do have hearts,” said a tearful Daisy.
