Porteous claims first win on tour

Haydn Porteous claimed the title with a two-shot victory at the Joburg Open.

YOUNGSTERS ruled the golfing scene at two major opens in just as many weeks when Haydn Porteous claimed his first win on The European Tour at the Joburg Open.

Brandon Stone overturned the odds two weeks ago at the South African Open when he added the title to his name. Both are in their early twenties, Porteous is 21 years old and Stone is 22, and they have now set the pace for other young golfers in the country.

Porteous from Modderfontein, claimed the title with a two-shot victory at the Joburg Open which was held from Thursday, January 14, to Sunday, January 17, at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club .

He shot a 69 on the East Course at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club to finish on 18 under, two shots clear of countryman Zander Lombard. The pair has earned themselves a place at The Open Championship at Royal Troon.

England’s Anthony Wall finished in a share of third alongside Swede Björn Åkesson, American Daniel Im and South African Justin Walters to earn his place at the year’s third Major Championship via this tournament for the second consecutive season.

This wins makes Poreous the second youngest South African winner in European Tour history, after Schwartzel at the 2005 Alfred Dunhill Championship.

In the meantime, Alberton resident Keith Horne didn’t make the cut on day two and could only finish in 96 joint position with 74, 68 and a total of 142.

Ernie Els recorded 70,70,68,74 to total 282. He played in his first Joburg Open to make history for this event.
