THE RECENT drought and heatwave has affected most people but farmers and people who look after animals have been especially affected by the heat. People around the country have organised ways to assist the animals and farmers who are suffering from the drought.

Drop off points for donations of water have been arranged in Johannesburg and the surrounding areas. People at these drop off points are in a position to take the water to where it is needed. Volunteers with transportation are also welcome to offer their help at the checkpoints.

The drop off points are:

1. Midvaal Fire Department

2. 44 Populier Road, Golf Park – contact 082 421 4485

3. 25 Sam Hewitt Street, Riversdal – contact 072 642 3982

4. Magchel Pretorius – 5 Spey Drive, Three Rivers – contact 076 421 3762

5. Bondvest, corner of Frikkie Meyer Boulevard and FW Beyers Street, Vanderbijlpark.

There has been a request from an Initiative for Horses for grass cuttings. They are not suitable for feed for horses but can be used for cattle and sheep if bagged and shipped.

The Facebook page “Horses in Need” helps to get feed to mainly horses but also helps other animals where they are able.

The Equestrian Community Initiative for Horses in Dire Straights with Desiré Winterbottom in the Free State is asking for grass, food and water for the Reddersburg area. Donations can also be organised with Desiré on 084 533 9479.

Residents in the South of Alberton can coordinate donations with Natasha Ferreira at 084 533 9479. Residents in the North of Alberton can coordinate with Viv Lovell-Harris on 078 377 9404.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
