January

*Little girl saved after being locked in a house for five days. Police broke down the door after many complaints about the situation. The mother of the child has since been arrested for child abuse and negligence.

*Young second year medical student from Wits, Jason Vermaak, volunteers at Stepping Stone Hospice in New Market Park after grandmother passed away from cancer last year.

February

*A mother and son from Eden Park both walk the road to recovery from cocaine addiction with the support of New Life Recovery.

*The Department of Education comments on plans to fight bullying, after widely reported incident of a 10-year-old girl being punched in the face. “Parents of the party who is injured should be informed of the incident immediately.”

*Stepping Stone Hospice extends their facility by adding two new dignity rooms for patients in need.

*The Lions rugby jersey of Julian Redelinghuys goes on auction to help raise funds for an operation to give a teacher, Kevin Mostert, a new kidney.

*Six officials of the metro’s Roads and Storm Water Department have been recommended for reinstatement after being suspended in an investigation involving irregular expenditure of around R819-million, according to a National Treasury report.

*Christo Kruger, a security guard at the Springbok Pharmacy, helps customers who may have trouble with the escalator by offering them his assistance, whether holding out his arm in support, or simply offering words of encouragement.

*Minister Bathabile Dlamini from the Department of Social Development, has received many complaints from various pensioners and grant beneficiaries about unwarranted deductions, leaving the complainants in financial strife.

April

*Representatives of the Alberton Heritage Society say the alterations being done on the old Alberton Town Hall in Alberton North are illegal as correct procedures to approve the alterations have not been followed.

*Family reunited with son that had been missing for more than 18 years after an Alberton SAPS employee noticed a photo posted on a Facebook page about a missing boy.

*The Alberton rugby team repeats their victory against the police last season, by defeating them with 29-13 prior to the Easter weekend in their last friendly.

*Yet another home assault leads to the hospitalisation of Tiny Serrurier (83). The suspects posed as EMM workers who were planning to install new water pipes to gain access to the premises.

*The Jackson Dam in Brackenhurst is in danger of being lost for future generations if the council does not do the necessary environmental studies and intervention to preserve this family gathering place.

*Alberton High School learner, Khyrin Boardman (18) receives a bursary from the Be Your Dream project and LifeLine ambassador, Anais, performs at Alberton High.

*90th Comrades Marathon lengthened by 877 metres, making the exact distance 87.72 kilometres for the runners to complete on May 31.

*Alberton Child Welfare receives help from the Democratic Alliance (DA) for funding. The DA approached the South African Human Rights Commission to investigate and set up a petition to hand over to government.

June

*Lizzie Khoza finds her passion working with patients after losing her job as a cleaner, starts auxiliary nursing course and starts working at Stepping Stone Hospice.

*Sharon Cloete (61), finds acceptance of her condition after becoming a patient at Stepping Stone Hospice and suffering for years from an on again/off again battle with cancer.

*Precious Ngwenya, mother to two deaf children, asks the help of anyone who is able to communicate in sign language, as she would like to communicate better with her children.

July

*Armstrong Truck Inn, in Alrode South, has a massive problem with an overflow of human waste, despite many complaints and reports to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM).

*Natural disaster as over a hundred fish die in the Jackson Dam. Fishing enthusiasts found the disturbing sight on Sunday, June 28. Samples have been sent to be studied to determine the cause of death.

*Case opened at the Eden Park SAPS against the boyfriend of a mother whose son was allegedly beaten with a broom stick. The boy is currently living with his biological father and other family members in a caravan and is receiving counselling.

*Rietvlei Zoo Farm has two new permanent residents in the form of Phantom and Hunter, two Canadian Timber wolf pups. They will serve as ‘ambassadors’ for the farm and will assist in educational presentations and possibly participate in photographic and film work.

*Brackendowns SAPS arrest three suspects for the possession of illegal raw tobacco to the value of approximately R3-million. The tobacco was going to be illegally exported to Singapore.

August

*The trial of a man accused of attempting to burn Southcrest resident, Jennifer van Tonder, alive, begins on Tuesday, August 4, in the Palmridge Magistrates Court.

*Brendon Macdonald (14), from Marais Viljoen High School, hopes for an operation that he needs to improve the state of his spine. Brendon suffers from a severe curvature of the spine (scoliosis), and without the operation his spine may snap.

*Naledi Masupa (10), a pupil from Kenton Primary School, dies after vehicle crashes into her and fellow pupil, Muntothile Nhlapo, in Vermooten Street, on Monday, August 17.

September

*Rhema Varrie qualifies for a top 10 position in the IdolsSA competion and makes his family, and the whole of Eden Park proud.

October

*Kevin Mostert, beloved maths teacher at Brackenhurst Primary School, thanks everyone for all their support, after his successful kidney transplant on Tuesday, September 29th.

*Everything above board with McClaren Circus, in spite of the many protests that have occurred with regards to the use of animals in the circus.

*Megan Gerber (16) becomes the youngest ever ballerina appointed as a dancer in the corps de ballet at the world class Johannesburg Ballet Company.

*Accused, Edwin Mbatha, found guilty of attempted murder in the Palmridge Magistrates Court, for setting the car of Jennifer van Tonder alight while she was in the car.

November

*One of the largest mandrax factories found in Gauteng, with equipment valued at R2-million, was found in Alrode during a Hawks bust.

*Kevin Mostert urges others to become organ donors as he recovers from his recent kidney transplant operation. “This story isn’t just about me, I want people out there to realise they can change someone’s future by giving the gift of life.”

*Stepping Stone Hospice 947 Momentum Cycling Team raises R612 000 for Hospice.

*Eden Park stages homecoming event at local high school for their IdolsSA hero, Rhema Varrie, who reached the top three in the 2015 IdolsSA competition.

*The DA gets booted from a council meeting after protesting against illegal meetings and ANC ineptitude. Police were called in to remove the councillors from the chambers.

*Desjuané Farmer (17 months) attacked and badly injured by Bullmastiff.
