New Food Card to help the poor

The Food Card is reportedly the first of its kind in South Africa and is aimed at alleviating poverty.

SAVF and Shoprite Holdings will launch South Africa’s first Food Card on December 17 at 10:00 and the media have been invited to find out what the food card is all about.

The Food Card is reportedly the first of its kind in South Africa and is aimed at alleviating poverty. The phase one roll-out of the Food Card will take place on Thursday at the SAVF head office in Arcadia, Pretoria.

According to Shoprite Holdings, the Food Card is similar to a gift card and members of the public receive the card free of charge and money can be loaded onto the card at any Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, OK or Usave.

The cards are then distributed among those in need and they can purchase food and other necessities at the above mentioned retailers. No alcohol or tobacco products may be purchased with the card.

SAVF and Shoprite Holdings developed the Food Card with a two-pronged approach in mind: Firstly, to enable those to purchase goods of their choice in a dignified manner and secondly, to ensure that contributors’ money are used for poverty alleviation.
