The Raj Indian Restaurant has opened its ninth restaurant at the Mall of the South in Aspen Hills and celebrated with an exclusive launch on November 24.

Dr Arun Jairath, explained that when the first The Raj Indian Restaurant opened in Kyalami he never imagined it would be the start of a very successful group. “While doing further medical training in the UK I enjoyed some excellent Indian meals in restaurants and realised that back home there were no restaurants that offered a similar experience,” said Dr Jairath, who has been living in Johannesburg for over two decades.

Her Excellency Ruchi Ghanashyam, the high commissioner of India to South Africa, was also present at the grand opening and explained how the many elements of India’s diverse culture, such as Indian religions, yoga and Indian cuisine, have had a profound impact across the world. “Indian food is as diverse as Indian culture,” she said. “It uses many different ingredients, utilises a wide range of food preparation styles, cooking techniques and culinary presentation.” In her address to VIP guests she quoted Atul Kochhar, the first Indian to receive two Michelin stars. He said: “I don’t think any cuisine in the world has got so many influences the way that Indian food has.”

With a reputation for efficient and friendly service countrywide The Raj Indian Restaurant in the Mall of the South is set to become a meeting point and fine-dining destination for southern Johannesburg. Not only does its menu offer a large variety of authentic Indian cuisine but it also offers an impressive wine list that has been taken from the Diamond Award winning wine list from the Montecasino branch.
