A 17-month-old girl is in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Netcare Clinton Hospital after being attacked by a Bullmastiff on Wednesday, December 9.
According to Desjuané Farmer’s mother, Hilda Sage, a resident of Mayberry Park, they were all at a house in Brackendowns, where they work from, when the latch of the gate disengaged, opened and allowed the dog to come through the gate and charge at Desjuané, biting and tearing at her head and face.
“The doctor says she will need to stay in ICU for around two weeks before anything else can be done. The damage is severe,” said Hilda.
Desjuané needs scans of her face done to further determine the extent of the damage, but so far it has been determined that she will need many surgeries, including reconstructive surgeries, to repair the damage.
The family does not have medical insurance and is unable to cover the massive cost of the scans and surgeries needed to give Desjuané the treatment she needs.
The owner of the dog and the house where the incident took place has put down a deposit for some of the treatment, but it is just a small fraction of what the total cost will ultimately come to.
