Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Mondli Gungubele, signed a declaration of disaster on November 24 after severe storms passed through the Metro last week.

The focus for disaster and emergency services personnel will now shift from providing temporary relief to reconstruction which will mean that they will be implementing permanent repairs to homes that have been affected.

Task team members have identified 3 386 households, in the week of November 16 to November 20, whose roofs were blown off or windows and structures damaged by the hail and strong winds. Temporary repairs to affected households in Etwatwa and Southern parts of Ekurhuleni have been completed.

The official declaration of disaster will reportedly assist in unlocking resources to enable the implementation of long-term assistance to bring permanent relief to the affected residents.

Individuals, organisations and businesses wishing to assist with the reconstruction of the affected houses may contact Disaster and Emergency Management Services on 011 999 9565.
