Employees left without work

Workers contracted to be part of the Clean City Brigade have been left without instruction or equipment for weeks.

EKURHULENI – Residents of Eden Park, Palmridge, Greenfield and Alberton who were told they had been chosen for the Clean City Brigade have reportedly been sitting outside the Alberton Civic Centre since November 2 with nothing to do.

Members of the public that have been contracted to participate in the Clean City Brigade in Alberton claim they have been kept from working on the project and left without information.

Contracted workers told the RECORD that they were required to bring bank statements and identification to the Civic Centre to apply for positions in the brigade. They were also asked to complete a test before being told that they had been chosen for a position in the team.

At first the workers were concerned because their contracts did not state what their remuneration would be but despite that, they arrived for work on November 2 at 08:00 and were told to wait.

According to Renata Pietersen, one of the workers, the workers are told that they should wait for further instructions every day, but at 16:00 every day they are told to go home. Supervisors reportedly stated that they do not have more information about the situation.

Nthabiseng Moatshe is a single mother who spends money on transport every day to sit in front of the Civic Centre without knowing if, when or how much she will be paid.

“I spend R120 for transport. That can feed me and my child for a week. They should have sorted everything out before they said that we had the jobs,” Moatshe said.
