Don’t forget your pets this festive season

As we head towards the end of the year it’s never too early to plan for the care and well-being of your pets.

ALBERTON – All pets, be they dogs, cats, birds or fish, need caring for, even if you go away for a day or two. Reputable and dependable boarding kennels and home pet care services are booked up months in advance.

It is important you check out the facilities on offer prior to booking your pet in. If possible, go for recommendations but do your homework. It is essential to check matters such as food services, cleanliness, exercise, how caring and knowledgeable the staff are.

If your pet has to go into kennels then their inoculations must be up to date – all reputable kennels require proof of vaccination certificates, which should be dated at least two weeks’ prior to admittance.

Another good option is a house pet sitter. With this option, your pets remain in familiar surroundings plus your home is not left vacant. Again, do your homework. Check references, ask your vet or friends for recommendations. Ensure you leave enough food for your pets and full instructions in case of a pet’s illness. In addition, make sure your house sitter has transport in case your pet needs to go to the vet. Prior to going away, make sure your pet is familiar with the person and that they in turn are comfortable with your pet.

Whatever you decide, do not leave it until the last minute as your pets deserve better than that. Be considerate and don’t expect the SPCA to assist if you have not planned ahead.
