A beautiful college

If you want to study in the field of beauty, SA College of Beauty, Hair and Health in Alberton North is the ideal place to hone your skills. With three dedicated full-time ladies who run a tight ship you cannot go wrong.

ALBERTON- SA College of Beauty, Hair and Health in Alberton North offers budding beauticians both practical and theoretical training.

Owner, Melanie Kromer, and her two full-time staff members aim to put SA College on the map again and build it into a training college of note.

The college offers beauty, hair and body therapy qualifications. Beauty studies include manicures, pedicures and nail technology. During the RECORD’s visit the students were constructing gel and acrylic nails as part of their practical assessment. The beauty side also includes day, evening and bridal makeup, skincare and eye treatments, eyebrow shaping and waxing.

Students also study anatomy and physiology as part of the course. For full-time students the beauty specialist certificate takes one year to complete, the body therapy diploma two years and the somatology qualification three years. All three courses are also offered on a part-time basis.

The hair care diploma takes two and a half years to complete with classes once a week for six hours only. Celeste Smith, the lecturer, says she prefers learners to become apprentices in a hair salon where they will also gain more practical experience.

“I also have my own salon which I use to do the assessments for SA College and other colleges. I started teaching last year for SA College,” explains Celeste. “We really care about our students and we know each one very well. I currently have 20 students. They invite their own models to practice on and we use a mannequin with real hair to train on.”

The body therapy qualification incorporates aromatherapy, reflexology, spa therapy, sport and Swedish massages as well as Indian head massages. To keep things lively and give the budding therapists exposure, the college regularly organises events and gets involved in the community.

This year they did the makeup and hair for Miss Junior SA as well as the makeup and hair for a music video. “It is all very exciting and creates a buzz with the students. They can see what they enjoy and what they will do in the future,” says Melanie.
