Surgery decreases Brendon’s curvature of the spine

ALBERTON- Brendon Macdonald (14), a Hoërskool Marais Viljoen learner, underwent corrective surgery for his severe curvature of the spine on November 3.

His spine was already bent to a 55 degree angle and was at risk of snapping, which would have confined the teenager to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

“It was a very long day and Brendon is recovering in ICU. The specialist is happy to report that the curvature could be reduced to only 10 per cent. He is very pleased with the outcome of the operation,” said his mother, Liza Long.

Currently Brendon, who is in a lot of pain, is not allowed to move but in five days time he will be able to move onto his other side, as long as his back remains straight. His physiotherapy will start when he is moved to a normal ward.

“We are so grateful to everyone who helped us reach this stage and we are very happy the operation is over,” added Liza.
