Hawks seize high-tech ATM skimming devices

A Serbian man is expected to appear in court today after he was arrested with the goods this morning.

A Serbian man, who was in possession of high-tech ATM skimming devices and bank cards, has been arrested by the Hawks, at his Alberton home, just after midnight on November 4.

The 50-year-old man is expected to make an appearance in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court today, facing charges of fraud, contravention of Section 86 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, as well as the contravention of Section 49 of the RICA Act.

During the search, the Hawks found 1500 bank cards which were already encoded. They also found 26 high-tech ATM skimming devices as well as R14 250 in cash.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, Hawks spokesperson, said the arrest came as a result of an ongoing organised crime operation which is aimed at tackling cybercrime.

“Authorities believe that the man is part of a syndicate operating in the area,” Mulaudzi told the RECORD.
