Meet Gauteng’s top female cop

Sergeant Phumza Mgedezi walked away as a worthy winner at a the recent Gauteng Prestige Awards ceremony.

ALBERTON – Sergeant Phumza Mgedezi of the Alberton Police Station is known to be a community heroine, and a recent prize-giving ceremony confirmed this.

At the annual Gauteng Prestige Awards, held at Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park, it was a time for police members to forget about their uniforms for a day and instead be treated and thanked for the work they do in their respective communities.

Mgedezi rubbed shoulders with other police stalwarts of the province, like top ranking Gauteng SAPS management and various station commanders.

Mgedezi must have made an impression on the judges with her outstanding work as she won the Woman of the Year Award, which was presented to her by the Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Lesiba Mothiba and the Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Major-General Deliwe de Lange.

This is the fourth trophy that she has won in less than two years.

Sergeant Phora Nkuna, police spokesperson for the Alberton Police Station, said they, as a station, are immensely proud of Mgedezi’s achievements.

“She gives her all when serving the community, reunites missing persons with their families and she places children at places of safety when there is a need,” he said.

“She also attends to the community’s social issues, works standby duties, compiles and distributes pamphlets with safety tips, makes sure that she attends community meetings and, through all of that, she also does drug awareness campaigns and presentations.”
