Vandalising street name signs is an offense

“Vandalising such important municipal property is an offence and can also cost people their lives” — ward councillor.

ALBERTON NORTH — Street name signs on the corners of Marthinus Oosthuizen Road, Tenth Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Street are being vandalised.

Ward 37 Clr Bruna Haipel believes the vandals must be people living in the area.

“Vandalising such important municipal property is an offense and can also cost people their lives,” she said pointing out that it could take emergency services including ambulances and the police longer to find a street in an emergency.

RECORD contacted the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) for clarity on the municipal by-laws and consequences should a culprit be caught vandalising municipal property and enquired how much fixing vandalised infrastructure costs the metro per annum.

At the time of going to print no comment from the metro had been received.
