Pavement wetland frustrates resident

Jack Delport reported a leaking pipe in his driveway in Mcbride Street which is now a gaping hole after the council opened it, ruined his driveway and left.

ALBERTON -A Frustrated Jack Delport, from Mcbride Street, contacted the RECORD on August 31 to say that there is a pond in his driveway due to a leaking water pipe.

According to Jack, the water was deep enough to attract bird life and has caused the grass to grow.

The matter was first reported on April 8 by his wife Rita, who is now deceased.

Jack said the water makes it very difficult for his daughter to park her car in the carport. “She cannot leave her car in the road because of the high theft in the area,” he said.

Jack would love to pave this driveway but there is no way he can even consider it. He has reported the matter and has five reference numbers.

After the RECORD made enquiries regarding the situation, Jack informed the reporter that excavations had begun.

Jack was very excited about the development and was sure the problem would be fixed. On October 6, Jack informed the RECORD that a gaping hole has now been left in his driveway with no workers in sight. “They have ruined my pavement and left.” he said.

Even though contractors have filled the excavation, the problem has not been completely resolved.

Comment received from EMM: The leak was repaired and before we could fill the excavation, the coating over the welding that was done had to be reinforced to prevent further leaks on the major 1.1 metre diameter main water feed.

This process was further delayed by the lack of access to contractors. The job requires specialist contractors and it will impact on the long term reliability of the supply. Reinstatement will be done as soon as the resources are available.
