VIDEO: Grayston bridge collapses; use alternative routes

The M1 freeway will be closed until further notice.

Two people was killed and at least 30 people were injured when the Grayston pedestrian bridge collapsed over the M1 freeway in Sandton this afternoon.

Several emergency services such as ER24, Life Healthcare and Emer-G-med were on the scene to give the needed emergency treatment.

Pieter Rossouw, spokesperson for ER24 said the injuries that were sustained range from minor to critical.

A press statement from Emer-G-med indicates that three cars was trapped under the bridge – a taxi, a Fortuner and a construction vehicle.

The driver and passengers in the Fortuner were trapped in the vehicle.

The freeway will be closed for traffic in both directions until the scene have been cleared up.
