IRPTN takes shape

Ekuruhuleni Municipality is preparing to introduce a flexible, safe and cost effective public transport system.

EKURHULENI – The upgrading of infrastructure and the transformation of the current public transport system to match world class standards is already at an advanced stage and according to municipal spokesperson, Themba Gabede, the new system could be launched in the latter part of the new year.

The Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN) will see the development of a high quality public transport system such as trains, buses and mini-bus taxis providing a seamless travel experience to Ekurhuleni commuters.

According to Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, Clr Petrus Mhlari, the imminent launch of the first Ekurhuleni Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) route running from Tembisa through Kempton Park to Vosloorus is the first step in the rollout of the IRPTN.

“Construction work is already underway and temporal inconveniences will be experienced by motorists and pedestrians travelling in these areas,” Mhlari explained. “Also the construction of the non-motorised transport infrastructure such as pedestrian walkways and a network for cycle paths are currently underway.”

The implementation of the IRPTN is the culmination of extensive consultations, engagements and surveys facilitated by the City of Ekurhuleni with the members of the public as well as key stakeholders in the transport industry.
