Alberton speaks to us about crime

In light of the crime statistics release, RECORD reporter, Belina Voortman, asked Albertonians how they had been affected by crime.

IN light of the crime statistics being released by the South African Police Service (SAPS), RECORD reporter, Belinda Voortman asked Albertonians how crime has affected them. Riëtte Swanepoel says that in 2013 almost every single house in Olivine Street in Randhart was broken into. “While the police were investigating the double storey house on the corner, the robbers were in the house right next door.” Fiona Correia said she will never go to the police for protection. “I will rather go to a security company. After we were robbed they told me that they had murders to deal with and didn’t have time to waste.”

FIONA CORREIA: Fiona from Brackenhurst and her then 18-year-old sister were victims of the silver Merc gang in 2014. The gang followed them into their parents’ driveway and forced them into the house. The perpetrators told the family to lie down and went outside to steal the car but for unkown reasons did not actually take it. Fiona says the incident disturbed her sister greatly and the police were not helpful at all.
SARIE AND NICK FOURIE: This lovely retired Raceview couple’s home was broken into in 2001 but they have not experienced any other negative incidents. They remain positive.
MARK HILL: After initially saying that he had only been the victim of petty theft, Mark later remembered that his Jetta was stolen about two years ago.
RIëTTE SWANEPOEL: In December 2013 robbers broke into the Swanepoel house in Randhart and stole two well hidden cameras and other valuables.
