Let’s stand united against police killings

More than 60 police members have been killed while on duty this year alone.

MORE than 60 police officers have been killed since the beginning of January this year and in an effort to curb the ongoing killing of police officers, over 15 000 flyers and ribbons were handed out during an awareness campaign recently held at the Alberton City Shopping Centre.

Jean Ingram, vice-chairperson for the Germiston Community Policing Forum (CPF) said the day was a huge success as more than 100 people joined a procession of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Cluster CPF, which include the areas of Alberton, Bedfordview, Brackendowns, Germiston and Elsburg.

“The procession started at Shoprite in Leondale, Germiston and ended at Alberton City,” explained Ingram. The campaign was opened in prayer by Patrick de Wet, a chaplain.

The Germiston CPF and security companies including E-track, Chubb Security, SW Security and CPS Security well as the Ekurhuleni Metro Police handed out flyers to members of the community.

“We are concerned with the amount of police members who have been killed on duty. The police who is there to serve have become targets and it must stop.”

Ingram said the day would not have been successful if it were not for several role players such as Alberton City and shops inside the centre including Woolworths, Checkers, Maxi’s, Wimpy and Game.

The organisers would also like to thank Theart Mey Ramabulana Inc Attorneys for their contribution as well as the Elsburg and Dinalview CPF for making the ribbons.
